Getting the Rebuilding Process Started

Why clear communication will get you through.

Even if you had chosen to remodel, planned it out, saved money, and felt ready, it would still be stressful. After a disaster, you’re being forced into this process without warning, without a plan, and often without a sense of choice. That alone can make everything feel overwhelming.

On top of that, you’re asked to make decisions quickly, things like choosing paint colors or materials, when you’re exhausted and still trying to cope. It’s okay to slow this down. You’re allowed to ask for options, to say you need time, and to get what actually works for you. You don’t have to rush just because the situation feels urgent.

✺ What disaster survivors have to say ✺

Making so many decisions about my home so quickly has felt overwhelming. I’ve had to work hard to advocate for myself during this process. Telling my contractor that I needed options was difficult at first, but I’m grateful I did—it helped me make better decisions and get what I wanted.
— Jeff, Tornado Survivor
Using movement every day and having structure to my day is saving my life. It is keeping me somewhat calm and focused.

Journal Prompts

Journaling after a disaster can be a gentle way to care for yourself during an overwhelming time. Putting your thoughts and emotions into words helps your brain and body make sense of what you’ve been through, easing anxiety and bringing back a small sense of control. Even a few sentences or simple notes can make a meaningful difference in supporting your healing and emotional balance.
