It won’t happen to you (until it does)

Spring is here and summer isn’t that far away. We have been in many conversations with our staff and partner organizations as we prepare for wildfires in drought-ridden Colorado, and spring tornados in Missouri and Arkansas. All three states have recently experienced weather-related events. So it begs the question: are YOU prepared?

It’s human nature to think "It won't happen to me"—right up until the sirens sound or the horizon turns grey. But hope isn't a strategy. Now is the perfect moment to move from "thinking about it" to "being ready." Taking ten minutes to audit your insurance policy today can be the difference between a minor setback and a total catastrophe later. To make it painless, we’ve created an easy to understand insurance guide for both homeowners and renters. We know preparedness isn’t fun. But when you need it later, you’ll appreciate those ten minutes you spent.

Hannah’s Journey to Stability

After a fire destroyed Hannah’s Colorado home, she suddenly found herself navigating the insurance claim process while trying to find temporary housing. Like usual, the fire happened at the worst time. It left her balancing an upcoming surgery, while also caring for both her mother and her daughter, who was preparing to graduate high school. As weeks turned into months, her temporary housing was about to expire and Hannah feared her family would have nowhere to go.

By utilizing OFP’s Stabilization Phase, Hannah was able to access housing resources, insurance navigation tools, and one-on-one support from our team. We also helped Hannah and her daughter cope with the increased anxiety and stress that inevitably follows a disaster. Most importantly, our team worked alongside Hannah for over two months, advocating for her with her insurance adjuster who was dismissing her and ignoring her claim.

Without the tools, advocacy, and support provided through the Our Front Porch Stabilization Phase, Hannah likely would not have secured an extension of her temporary housing. As well, with our team’s guidance, she successfully negotiated with her insurance company and kept her family safely housed during an incredibly difficult time.

With gratitude,

The Our Front Porch Team

P.S. For just $50, you could put the Stabilization Toolkits into the hands of someone who needs answers and guidance like Hannah. It’s a small price to give someone peace of mind when they’re having to make so many difficult decisions before they feel ready. One recent survivor said, “The toolkits were so helpful and answered questions I didn’t even know I had. Thank you so much.”

Your gift today ensures that the next family in Colorado, Missouri, or Arkansas has the information they need when they need it.
