Module 1: The First Steps to Replacing Your Belongings
Tips for staying organized on the front end
When you’ve lost everything, the thought of replacing it all can feel overwhelming. You’re likely juggling immediate needs (like clothes and toothbrushes) with big-picture items (like furniture) while trying to keep insurance requirements in mind. Insurance companies eventually want an inventory list of what you lost and proof that you replaced things with similar quality ("like for like"). But don't worry about the master list today—we will help you with that in a later module. For now, your only job is to stay organized. Here are two simple ways to do that:
Use Shopping Apps: If you shop at stores like Amazon, Target, or Walmart, use their apps. They automatically track your digital receipts, which is a lifesaver when insurance asks for proof of purchase and pricing months from now.
Save those receipts: If you buy something in person, keep the paper receipt. Grab a folder or a large Ziploc bag and drop every receipt inside. Pro Tip: Write what you bought across the top of the receipt in pen; thermal paper fades over time, and "Item #4092" is hard to remember later!
