Module 3: Your Survival Mantra

Don’t rush. Take a breath. Ask for help.

When you’re in the middle of a crisis, everything feels like an emergency that needs to be solved "right now," but this is exactly when you need to pause. "Don't rush. Take a breath. Ask for help." is a rule to protect you.

Don’t rush anything because your high stress makes it hard to spot the scammers and predatory contractors who thrive on chaos. This is also not the time to make major decisions about housing or other big life changes. You have just had your life turned upside down and likely aren’t in the right head space to consider all the options. Scammers also rely on the "urgency trap" to pressure you into agreeing to contracts you haven’t completely read or understood. And once a contract is signed, it can be incredibly difficult to undo. By refusing to sign anything on the spot, you protect yourself from predatory scams and allow yourself time to vet contractors. You will get more guidance on this in later toolkits, but for now, just buy yourself time and don’t sign anything. The only immediate service you need is to have your home boarded up if it hasn’t been done already. Then just collect business cards and wait.

Take a breath to settle your nervous system so you can think clearly again. When everything feels like it’s moving at a million miles an hour, this is the most productive thing you can do. And it isn't just a suggestion; it is a physiological tool that tells your body it’s okay to step out of "survival mode," lowering your heart rate and clearing the mental fog so you can think logically again. Please give yourself permission to slow down. Disaster recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, and your best decisions will be made when you allow yourself the space to be steady, calm, and informed.

Ask for help because disaster recovery is a complex maze that no one expects you to navigate on your own. There is a common misconception that being "resilient" means doing everything yourself. No one is taught how to navigate disaster recovery, and we are here to help you. So reach out to us with any questions and join the virtual groups so you don’t go through this alone.

Don’t rush into signing contracts

While it’s tempting to sign with one of the many contractors currently reaching out just to check this task off your list, we urge you to pause. Before you commit, please read our What to Look for in a Contract guide to ensure you are fully protected and know exactly what you are signing.
